Welcome to the Virgo new moon 2026, and the second new moon of the harvest season. Poised on the edge of the Fall Equinox (Mabon) and the Jewish high holidays, the Virgo new moon is always a period of reflection, of assessment, and of making the necessary adjustments in order to bring more of the harvest you want. This year, we have a critical election looming. We have more and more of the world embracing authoritarianism and extinction capitalism. This year, this Virgo new moon asks you to spend a little time exploring the depths of your soul.
There are times when the ancient names and interpretations of the constellations need translating into modern terms. Now is one of them. Virgo is one of them. Historically, Virgo's constellation is the virgin – known for her chastity and purity. People are often confused and conflicted by Virgo’s affiliation with virginity. It's important to remember that what is being emphasized here is not necessarily the principle of virginity. It is the virtues that underlie it, the commitment to them, and the grounded strength it takes to live from that place.
Especially now. We live in an age where virtues are no longer valued. A lot of folks don't know what they mean or what they are. Or why they are important. In my work with groups and with individuals this summer, virtue has been a bit of a recurring theme. Now that we're in Virgo season, and we're at the exact moment in the month when the attributes of this archetype are the easiest to access, it is a good time to have this conversation.
Virtue is defined as a character trait or behavior that governs actions, that orders passions, and that guides conduct through a commitment to high moral standards, righteousness, strength, and goodness. When consciously applied, virtues raise your vibration and keep you more aligned with the divine. Every faith has clearly delineated qualities and characteristics that it suggests its followers should aspire to. Virtues common to most faiths are things like temperance, strength, honesty, and service above self.
There are variations; their subtle nuances are powerful. In the Christian tradition, there are two primary categories of virtue. The Natural Virtues (or Cardinal Virtues) are those you cultivate through your daily spiritual practice, and they are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The Theological Virtues are said to be those infused into human souls by God, and they are: faith, hope, and charity. In the Tarot, there are four virtues: temperance, justice, fortitude, and prudence/wisdom.
In Buddhism, the four main virtues are said to free you from suffering, and they are these: loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. In Hinduism there are a lot: non-violence, honesty, integrity, generosity, self-restraint (also mentioned as self-control and moderation), righteousness, forgiveness, and forbearance. In Islam they are patience, gratitude, honesty, generosity, humility, mercy and forgiveness, and justice.
While Capricorn is generally believed to govern the concept of virtue, Virgo rules the act of being virtuous — especially that of being virtuous in an unvirtuous world. And especially during times like now, when virtue and virtuousness are seen as weaknesses. Because of that, Virgo is considered to be one of the most profound signs.
Because of that, Virgo season is considered to be one of the most profound times of the year. If you can stand in that power, you can infuse your harvest and harvest season with life-changing transformational opportunities. Last night’s new moon in Virgo provides the ability and opportunity to identify those virtues that are the most important to you. In the days that follow, you will have a greater ability to understand how to activate and integrate them as they exist within you.
Ask your gods, guides, guardians, angels, archangels, and ancestors to show you which virtues need your attention, how, and why. Ask them to guide your thoughts, actions, words, and deeds, so that you can keep your heart and mind, your eyes and your ears open. Listen to the answers you receive and trust them.
